Bernice Smith Scruggs, 88 of Brevard, N.C., passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Tore’s Home.

She was born June 2,1925, in Habersham County to the late Oscar and Bessie Maude Smith. Mrs. Scruggs retired from Sky City, where worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Glady Branch Baptist Church. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch and being surrounded by her loving neighbors on Carolina Avenue. The “Carolina Avenue friends” will miss her.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Leon Scruggs in 2000; two sons, Dennis Scruggs and Terry Scruggs; and a brother; John D. Smith.

She is survived by: her daughter; Sharon Scruggs Edwards and husband Clark of Forest City, N.C., a brother, Harold Smith and wife Carolyn of Evans; a daughter-in-law, Betty M. Scruggs of Brevard; nine grandchildren, Colby Scruggs, Jeff Scruggs, Karyn Scruggs Roth, Marc Spratt, Shane Spratt, Casey Edwards Walker, Dwayne Edwards, Crystal Leonard and Jessica Leonard; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Glady Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Thompson officiating. Burial followed at Gillespie-Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Glady Branch Baptist Church, 1156 Rosman Highway, Brevard, NC 28712; or Transylvania Regional Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 2440, Brevard, NC, 28712.

Scott Provance loves the smell of fresh asphalt in the morning. He revels in getting his hands dirty when a job needs to get done. These are a few of the qualities he possesses that will serve him well in his new position as director of the Rabun County Roads Department.
