Charles MacDowell “Mac” Swanson, 81, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 after an extended illness.

Mac was born April 22, 1931 in Rabun Gap, Georgia to George and Hattie Brooks Swanson. He was married to Glenda Norton on June 27, 1952.

Mac is survived by: his wife of 60 years, Glenda; a son, Mark and wife Sam Annabel Ramsey; a daughter Lisa and husband Hank Carpenter; a daughter, Kara; and four grandchildren, Christopher Carpenter and wife Melissa; Genny Abernathy and husband Michael, Adam Carpenter and Beth Carpenter. Mac also is survived by two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Lorna Abernathy; a brother, Don Swanson and wife Stella; and several surviving nieces and nephews.

Upon graduation from Rabun County High School, Mac attended Young Harris College on a basketball scholarship from the Young Harris College Mountain Lions. He then graduated from Georgia State University.

Mac was employed as personnel director of Lee’s Carpets and Burlington Industries. He was a member of Clayton First United Methodist Church. He was a member and served as chairman of both the Rabun County Hospital Authority and the Rabun County Board of Education.

A memorial service was held Friday at Beck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Charles Green officiating.
