Vivian Virginia Matthews Tatum, 94, of Walhalla, S.C., and formerly of Rabun Gap and Cornelia, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Lila Doyle Nursing Facility in Seneca, S.C.

She was married to the late Wilmer Reginald Tatum Sr. for 59 years. She was the daughter of the late Jay Brayton and Monnie Scarborough Matthews, formerly of Asheville, N.C.

She and her husband served in several capacities at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School from 1960 until his passing in 1994, including as a dorm mother and managing the clothes closet. She worked at Rabun Gap Crafts for a number of years. She also served as co-chairwoman of the Habersham Baptist Association Committee for Georgia Baptist Children’s Home from 1950-60. She most recently was a member of Head of Tennessee Baptist Church and a volunteer at the Sharing & Caring thrift store in Clayton.

She also was preceded in death by: three sisters, Helen Franklin, Hazel Puckett and Stella Waters; a brother, Jay B. Matthews II; and a granddaughter, Regina Tatum Hopkins.

She is survived by: three children, Reg Tatum (Peggy Westbrook) of Walhalla, Ginger Restall (Bob) of Deep River, Ontario, Canada, and Tommy Tatum (Merry Bond), of Armuchee; three grandchildren, Mary Tatum Hudson (Donald), William Tatum (Jessica Nichols) and Russell Restall (Amanda DeSerres); 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and loved by many nieces, nephews and neighbors.

Graveside services were held Monday at Wesley Presbyterian Cemetery at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gideon’s International Card Plan, P.O. Box 237, Walhalla, SC 29691.
