Peggy Juanita Haslett Hamby Collins died following a short battle with chronic myleomonacytic leukemia on Friday, March 7, 2014.

Born May 30, 1943, in Gainesville, she grew up in Tucker, where she graduated from Tucker High School in 1961 and from West Georgia College in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Later, she earned a master’s degree in education from North Georgia College. She taught fourth grade in Fulton County for two years and she taught LA and GA studies for 17 years at Rabun County Middle School. In 1998, Peggy was named middle school Teacher of the Year.

Peggy was a member of Clayton Baptist Church for 45 years, a longtime member of the Anita Roper Circle and a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, George Terry Haslett and LaVelle Jane Reynolds Haslett; her first husband, William Franklin Hamby, DDS; and a nephew, James Henry Glen III.

She is survived by: her husband, Bobby Richard Collins of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth Hamby Becker and husband Robert of Cumming and Gina LaVelle Hamby Chambers of Hiawassee; and five grandchildren, William Henry “Hank” Chambers, 16, Andrew Tucker Chambers, 14, Emily Kaitlyn Becker, 6, and twins Carson and Cole, 4.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Beck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Campbell officiating. Burial followed at Rabun Memory Park.
