She was born June 7, 1924, in Piedmont, S.C., to the late George Tillman Wood and Bessie Collins Wood. She was a seamstress in the textile industry, a homemaker and worked in various departments of the Church of God where her husband, the Rev. Vernon V. Wood was a minster of the gospel for 59 of their 61 married years. She was a member of Scaly Mountain Church of God.
Mrs. Wood is survived by: a son, Doyle Wood (Judy) of Fayetteville, N.C.; twin daughters, Martha Bass (David) of Asheville, N.C., and Margaret Lackey (the Rev. Ron Lackey) of Concord, N.C.; six grandsons, David Bass Jr. (Jamie) of Knoxville, Tenn., twins Wayne Bass and Alan Bass (Holly), both of San Diego, R. Reed Lackey Jr. (Jennifer) of Los Angeles, Joshua Wood (Ashley) of Falls Church, Va., and Colin Wood of Fayetteville, N.C.; a granddaughter, Christy Versell Simmons (Gregg) of Concord, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren, Grace, Luke, John and Drake Bass, Landon and Peyton Simmons and Sawyer Lackey; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Prentiss Church of God with officiating by the Rev. Bill Sheeks, Eleanor Sheeks, Mamie A. Barwick and the Revs. Al Sizemore, Andre Hester and Jimmy Smith. A graveside service was held Wednesday at West View Cemetery in Easley, S.C., with officiating by the Revs. Jerry Chitwood, Paul Collins and Ron Lackey.
