Mae was born Nov. 26, 1925, to Carrie Mae (Lunsford) and William Grady Hardman. She had lived in Rabun County since 1971, where she taught at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School until her retirement. Prior to teaching, Mae was a social worker for Bibb Manufacturing Company for 27 years. She was very active in both of her communities, which she dearly loved. Mae served in many civic organizations and held positions over the years in both the Porterdale Presbyterian Church and the Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church. Mae dedicated her life to the service of God and all people with whom she had contact. She was a caring and devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sibling, James.
Survivors include her two nieces, Dorothy Ellen Hardman of Fort Valley and Jane Hardman Alexander of Covington; nephew, James E. Hardman, Jr., and his wife, Martha of Covington; and a great-niece, Carrie Melissa Hardman of Macon.
A graveside service for Mae was held Saturday, July 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Carmel Cemetery, in Mansfield, with the Rev. Don Barber officiating. In lieu of flowers, Mae’s family asks that any memorial be made to Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church, 8397 North Wolffork Road, P.O. Box 333, Rabun Gap, GA 30568.
