John Edward Weathers, 86, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his residence in Rabun Gap.

Mr. Weathers was born on Sunday, Oct. 18, 1925, in Columbus, Miss., to the late John Murphy and Dewey Mae Lollar Weathers. He was a charter member and one of the founding families of Antioch Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran who served on an LST in the Pacific during World War II. He was the co-founder of Weathers Construction Company in 1982. In 1990, he retired and moved to Rabun Gap. He was a loving father and grandfather, and loved being outdoors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Forrester Weathers.

Survivors include: his wife, Sue Weathers of Rabun Gap; a daughter, Wanda Soukup (Sam) of Ocean Springs, Miss.; a son, Gary Weathers (Debi) of Columbus, Miss.; a brother, Arnold Weathers (Connie) of Columbus, Miss.; four stepdaughters, Selina Witt (John), Katrina Donovan (Brian), Anita Swingle (Steve) and Lanette Diss; 14 grandchildren, Matt Soukup (Stacy), Emily Hankins (Johnny), Stephens Weathers (Tracy), Kinsley Welch (Andrew), Stephen Witt, Cody Swingle, Clay Swingle, Whitley Diss, Lexie Diss, Ryan Rae, Kalyn Rae, Kelsy Rae, Daniel Griffin (Jennifer) and Krista Griffin; and seven great-grandchildren, Miranda, Garrett, Emma, Drew, Dylan, Alinea and Kinsley.

Services were held Oct. 13 at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Gillon officiating. Burial, with U.S. Navy honors, followed at Beersheba Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Mark Weathers, Dan Weathers, Todd Weathers, Larry Weathers, Joe Sheppard and Drew Hankins. Honorary pallbearers were Dylan Hankins and Dan Nowell.
