Henrietta Whidden ‘Penny’ Melton

Henrietta Whidden “Penny” Melton, 80, of Tiger, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012, at her home.

Penny was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Bartow, Fla., to the late Monte Julian and Jessie Braswell Whidden. She was a graduate of Florida State University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Penny and her husband, Donald E. Melton, were married in Mulberry, Fla., in 1957 and lived in Winter Haven, Fla., until they moved to Mountain City in 1974. They became residents of Tiger in 2001. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Clayton.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Whidden Hicks.

Survivors include: her husband, Donald E. Melton of Tiger; a niece, Susan E. Hicks of Miami Beach, Fla.; and a nephew, Monte W. Hicks of Charlotte, N.C.

Her body has been cremated, and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at St. James Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Regency Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 494, Hiawassee, GA 30546.
