She was born May 5, 1915, in Rabun County to the late Lewis Neal Shirley and Sibbie Bynum Shirley. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; three brothers, Sutton, Frank and S.T. Shirley; and three sisters, Ella Shirley Dickerson, Grace Shirley Green and Clara Shirley Sibley.
She is survived by: three nieces, Doris Shirley Pruett and Carol Shirley Brown, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Virginia Shirley Roberts of Atlanta; four nephews, Tom Shirley of Clayton, Mike Sibley of New Orleans, Neal Dickerson of Rabun Gap and Robert Dickerson of Carrollton; and a special caregiver, Sue Matheson.
Gladys was a lifelong member of Clayton Baptist Church. After graduating from high school in Clayton, she attended Young Harris College and received her bachelor’s degree in education from Georgia State College, formerly Georgia State College for Women. She then attended Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. receiving a master’s degree in education. She was a teacher in the Rabun County school system for 43 years, retiring in 1977.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with the Rev. Doyle Patterson and layman Lloyd Hunter officiating. Burial followed at Bethel Cemetery.
