George H. Kramer Jr. passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Halcyon Hospice House in Atlanta.

Mr. Kramer was born Nov. 18, 1935, in Blackwater, Mo., to George and Geneva Kramer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural chemistry in 1957 and a master’s in 1963 from the University of Missouri. His master’s thesis was recognized by the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists, now called the Association of Analytical Chemists. In 1960, this international organization adopted the findings of Mr. Kramer’s thesis as the official method for determination of potassium levels in fertilizer. On Sept. 14, 1968, he married Carol Vabo in Arrow Rock, Mo.

In 1963, he joined C.F. Industries as a technical services chemist. He worked for C.F. Industries for 35 years. During that time, he traveled to parts of the United States and Canada to help member companies solve plant and production problems. During his career, Mr. Kramer wrote manuals for handling chemicals, established labs in multiple Florida locations and developed new procedures for the processing of phosphate. He developed a procedure for eliminating slime pond in sand mountains in phosphate mining operations.

Mr. Kramer retired to Clayton in 1998 with wife Carol. He served as an AARP Tax Aide volunteer and held the offices of treasurer, vice president and president of the Rabun County chapter of AARP.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Geneva Kramer.

He is survived by: his wife, Carol; a daughter, Suzi and husband Dave; and two grandchildren, Abby and Cody.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Wiley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alice Wood officiating.
