He was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Leedey, Okla., to Angela and Dennis Pumphrey. The family, including a younger brother Maurice Allen Pumphrey, moved to Chula Vista, Calif., in 1943, where Dan graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1948. Dan was called to active duty by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951 and served as a cryptographer in 1st Signal Battalion, 1st Division U.S. Marine Corps. He married Caleda Lynette (Chandler) Pumphrey while on active service in 1951 and completed his service in the position of staff sergeant in 1953.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from San Diego State University and a master’s in humanities from the University of California-Berkeley before completing his Ph.D. in counselor education in 1974 at the University of Pittsburgh.
His professional career included teaching high school and graduate classes before being named principal and director of the Regional Occupation Program for Grossmont Union High School District in 1979. This appointment was followed by being named director of vocational education for the entire San Diego and Imperial counties of California in 1985, serving over 30,000 students.
Retiring in 1991, he and his first wife, Lynette, moved to Rabun Gap. From 1993-96, he served as executive director of Hospice of Northeast Georgia. From 1998-2000, he worked as a real estate agent and appraiser. Active as an elder and choir member at Wiley Presbyterian Church, he continued to read, garden, hike and travel.
Dan was preceded in death by: his first wife Lynette; his mother, Angela Clark Bowman; and a brother, Maurice Allen Pumphrey.
He is survived by: his wife of 10 years, Margo Larsen Pumphrey; two sons, Bennett L. Pumphrey of Newbury Park, Calif. and Barrett A. Pumphrey of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter, Celia Ann Price of Spotsylvania, Va.; a stepdaughter, Martha Helen Geisler of St. Augustine, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Beck Funeral Home is providing cremation services. A celebration of his life service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Wiley Presbyterian Church with officiating by the Rev. Alice T. Wood.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Dan’s memory to Wiley Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 178, Wiley GA 30581. Donations will be applied to needed hymnals and pews.
