Curtis Matthew Turner, 82, of Lavonia, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Lakemont.

He was born in Fulton County to Richard Davis Turner and Sutie Nova Mable Turner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Christine Gerda Drechsel; and a brother, Kenneth Gordon Turner.

Curtis is survived by: a son, Curtis Matthew Turner II and wife Brooke of Apex, N.C.; three daughters, Christina Nova Mooers and husband Jeffrey of Lakemont, Monique Gisela Rettie and husband James of Lawrenceville and Michelle Andrea Burns and husband Christopher of Fredericksburg, Va.; three brothers, Richard Davis Turner of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, Marion Lamar Turner of Gainesville and Michael Maury Turner of Jonesboro; a sister, Andrea Turner Sellars of Norcross; and five grandchildren.

Curtis was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a retired school teacher for the Suffolk County, N.Y., school system, where he was very active within the school. He enjoyed coaching, teaching math and homeschooling disabled children. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and he was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at Westview Abbey Chapel at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta with military honors and the Rev. Jeffry Reynolds officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Curtis Turner’s memory may be made to the Sid Weber Memorial Cancer Fund, P.O. Box 485, Rabun Gap, GA 30568; or to Halcyon Hospice, 1435 Haw Creek Road E. ste. 402, Cumming, GA 30341.
