Barbara Lee McKay Ramey

Barbara Lee McKay Ramey, 83, of Wiley, passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born in Rabun County to the late John Percy McKay and Ruby Keener McKay. She played basketball for Lakemont High School in the 1944, ’45 and ‘46 seasons. She was feared by her competitors. She graduated from Lakemont High in 1946, and after graduation she married the love of her life, Hoyt Ramey. They were married 66 years. Her life was devoted to sharing her faith in Jesus Christ and taking care of her family. She enjoyed cooking, canning, making jams and jellies, flowers and gardening.

Barbara was preceded in death by: her parents; and three brothers, J.L. McKay, Tommy McKay and John McKay.

She is survived by: her loving husband, Hoyt Ramey of Wiley; two sons and daughters-in-law, Cannon and Ruth Ramey of Lakemont and Steve and Linda Ramey of Habersham County; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra Ramey Marchman of Tiger, Lorie and Anthony Thompson of Clayton and Nan and Wayne Holcomb of Wiley; three brothers, Kenneth McKay of Lakemont, Curtis McKay of El Cajon, Calif., and Richard McKay of Clarksville; a sister Bert Lovell of Doraville; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Townsend and Brian Cavender officiating. Burial followed in Wiley Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church for renovations to the nursery, 6467 Highway 441 S., Lakemont, GA 30552 (706-782-2734); or to an organization with which Barbara’s niece, Sue Mckay Edwards, works.
